There is nothing like a sound system

Reggae Sound System scene in Glasgow – TRAILER

"Glasgow's reggae sound systems are gaining worldwide fame these days – getting local sounds to travel to far away places and also bringing a lot of big to play their shows in Glasgow. Sound system sessions are both the opportunity to see famous producers, MC's and singers and a showcase Glasgow's own music and style. Heavy bass is the main focus – music played on custom made speakers sounds powerful, clean and organic. Music played in big warehouses, small clubs and sometimes the most unlikely secret locations. Music that brings people from all backgrounds together and makes Glasgow an exciting place to live."

The 4 sounds competing were Mackain Touring (LA/JAMAICA) VS. Tribeof Kings (SD/USA) VS. DYNAMQ SOUNDS INTL (KC/AFRICA) VS. Culture Blend (NJ/TRINDAD). Winner of the clash is Dynamq aka THe Sudanese Warrior.

Protoje - I&I

The 'I&I' video features the likes of Kabaka Pyramid, No-Maddz, Jesse Royal, Hempress Sativa, Jah9, Chronixx plus members of Zincfence, Pentateuch and Raging Fyah along with other familiar faces. Members of Protoje's band, The Indiggnation, are also prominent in various scenes.

What made the whole ordeal special was that it was more than just a mere music video shoot. According to author Dutty Bookman, who assisted with organizing the march, it was revolutionary action.

"The music video was more like a smokescreen," Bookman recalled. "We handed out some thought-provoking leaflets with inspiring words from Haile Selassie I, Marcus Garvey and Walter Rodney. I could see that drivers and pedestrians really appreciated the information they were receiving."

Gentleman - You Remember

Gentleman, German Reggae Star takes us back to a time when people still used to write letters in his new video.
Do you remember?

Frankie Paul Sings Dennis Brown

"One cannot understate the importance of the late Dennis Brown to the world of reggae. At his funeral in Kingston in 1999 then Prime Minister P.J. Patterson spoke as part of the three hour tribute to a great man's life, commenting that "Over the years, Dennis Brown has distinguished himself as one of the finest and most talented musicians of our time. The Crown Prince of Reggae as he was commonly called. He has left us with a vast repertoire of songs which will continue to satisfy the hearts and minds of us all for generations to come." From this great cannon of work, and with respect, Frankie Paul is honored to present this collection of some of Dennis Brown's best material.

Despite passing at a mere 42 years of age, Brown's career as Jamaica's leader in lovers rock ran for more than 30 years and at least 75 full length recordings. You'd have to search long and far to find a better performer to curate such an overview of a great artist's legacy than Frankie Paul. Sometimes known as the "Jamaican Stevie Wonder", at the onset of his career Paul's soulful vocals were often compared to Brown; a comparison no Jamaican artist at the time would find anything but complimentary.

From No Man Is An Island which Brown recorded for Sir Coxsone Dodd at a mere 12 years of age through to '82's Love Has Found Its Way with many other stops on Brown's musical map this set finds a reggae great honoring the tradition of a reggae great: and of course, with respect."

Rise Up Reggae Star

BBC Four - Storyville 2009-2010

"On an island where reggae is considered the voice of the people and an outlet for survival, Rise Up Reggae Star follows three aspiring artists who seek to 'rise up' from obscurity for their chance at success. This documentary takes the viewer off the beaten path, far from any tourist attractions and sandy beaches; yet it is still able to capture the beauty and magic that the Island has to offer. From the deep countryside to the whirlwind ghettos of Kingston, no matter where you are, the film makes it evident that music is the heartbeat of the culture.

In a society where talent abounds and opportunity is scarce, Rise Up follows the very different lives of three artists struggling in their own unique way for their big break at stardom. Turbulence, the conscious ghetto youth with enough determination to move mountains; Ice, the young faux-gangster dancehall artist from the upper class; and Kemoy, the beautifully innocent country girl who barely realizes her amazing vocal gifts - their stories unfold as the film seamlessly interweaves their lives behind the backdrop of the bustling underground reggae scene of Jamaica. Five years in the making, Rise Up is able to capture the pure artistry and creativity of these three musicians in raw form while at the same time, able to bring the viewer into their personal lives, inside their most private moments, as they struggle to find their voice and discover their ability to overcome life's obstacles."

Jesse Royal-Modern Day Judas (RootsMan Riddim)

Jesse Royal's tune called Modern Day Judas on the Roots Man Riddim produced by Winta James for Overstand Entertainment.

Blessed with a voice that captures the pain and hunger of a ‘downtrodden’ people; Royal’s militant character and profound lyricism caught the heart of heralded reggae producer, Philip ‘Fatis’ Burrell. Fatis Burrell, affectionately called ‘Father’ had a great and pure impact on the ‘old soul’ of Jesse; as he credits him as an invaluable inspiration and one of the most influential individuals that he has ever encountered.
