Downbeat Sound from New York

Founded in the seventies by selector Tony Screw in New York City, Downbeat rapidly became not only a regional force, but one that could compete with the strongest sounds from Jamaica.

In the "rub-a-dub" era of the 1980's, Downbeat ensured its success by regularly featuring the best of Jamaica's microphone talent. Top artists like Shabba Ranks, Super Cat, Jonny Osbourne  Josey Wales, Ninjaman, Professor Nuts, Shinehead Michigan and Smiley, and more. This features several artists and one of Babylon Down's favorite singer Mr. Horace " Sleepy" Andy.

Jah9 - New Name (Official Music Video)

KINGSTON, JAMAICA - There is mounting anticipation for Jah9's debut album, New Name, slated for release later this year. Now her fans will be rewarded for their patience with the smoothly produced title track by Rory "Stone Love" Gilligan.

'New Name' has an anthem quality, with Jah9's trademark clarity of voice, enunciation and solemnness of message all colliding in a milestone piece of music. If four and a half minutes could begin to capture the magnetism of Rastafari for this rising generation, 'New Name' would be it.

Sleep is the cousin of death. That’s common knowledge, not just in Queensbridge but also in Brooklyn where hip hop, dancehall and soca don Dre Skull pulls all-nighters on the regular, just to make sure dances worldwide never run out of high octane riddims. After lacing beats for heavy hitters such as Beenie Man, Popcaan and Pusha T, the mighty Major Lazer asked him to co-produce Snoop Dogg’s reggae-fied reincarnation as Snoop Lion. Being raised to the sounds of the East Coast underground freak-punk scene, Dre Skull perceives urban music culture as a holistic affair and follows the paths of Don Was, Rick Rubin and Heavy D in terms of working with artists from various fields.
