The Yardies

This film investigated the Jamaican trade in crack and cocaine from Kingston to Miami and beyond. Known as Yardies, Jamaican organized crime had its roots in the poor areas of the city but also grew on the back of corrupt politicians from the country's two main political parties. This 1994 film talked to gang leaders, informers and U.S. law enforcement officials, who described the Yardies as the most ruthless and vicious criminal organization in the world.
'An excellent job in analyzing the corrupt, impoverished state of much of Jamaican society....chilling', wrote the Times (22.1.94). 'Excellent' said the Daily Mail (26.1.94). The Guardian described the film as a 'death-defying' and 'scary profile of a new breed of gangsters'.

FRANKIE PAUL

Frankie Paul
Hailed as one of Jamaica’s biggest dancehall stars, Frankie Paul / F.P. also known as Paul Blake has been making hits for over fifteen years. Born blind and raised by the Salvation Army in Kingston, he began singing at an early age. His parents could not afford to buy him musical instruments and therefore Frankie Paul developed his musical skills and talent in the church and in school. When Frankie Paul was four years old, he went on the Hope Ship where they worked with him for four years enabling F.P. to see through his right eye. His musical genius continued throughout his childhood. At the age of nine Frankie Paul was suspended for singing in school “too much”. F.P.’s punishment was that he would not be allowed to sing in school for the period of one year.
Frankie Paul’s version of Starship’s song “Sara” became his biggest selling hit. His prolific and charismatic style carried F.P. across the globe spreading his fame all over the Caribbean, England, Europe & Japan.

This is the full documentary made in 1981 in the UK and narrated by Mikey Dread. The film looks at the role of the Sound System in reggae and in UK culture in general, during a golden area for UK based Sound Systems. It has particular focus on Sound Systems like ‘Young Lion’ Sound System, and ‘Sir Coxsone’ Sound System, with in depth interviews with the crew of each.

It’s packed full of rarely seen interviews with Lloyd Coxsone, a young David Rodigan (with moustache), and contributions from Sugar Minott, Trinity and many more.

DJ DERREK

Derek was born & raised in Bristol, & during the late 50's & early 60's fell in love with the music & culture of the West Indian immigrants moving to Britain. He picked up the lingo by hanging around in barber shops & listening, & picked up the groove by buying & selling reggae records around the country.
Now in his late 60's Derek tours the country armed only with a backpack full of killer tunes, his bus pass & an unquenchable thirst for real ale.
